Liverpool are reportedly preparing to make a fresh bid for Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, according to reports from Catalan outlet El Nacional. The Reds had a £51 million bid for the Uruguayan midfielder turned down earlier this month, but are now said to be preparing a new offer of around £77 million.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are in the market for new midfield options, having already added Alexis Mac Allister to their ranks. The departures of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita have left Liverpool in need of reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Valverde, 24, has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, and his extensive winning experience would be a valuable asset to the team. He has already won two LaLiga titles and a Champions League trophy, and was included in the 2022-23 LaLiga team of the season.
Valverde’s opportunities at Madrid look limited following the arrival of Jude Bellingham and the renewed contracts of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Dani Ceballos. Madrid’s decision not to sell Aurelien Tchouameni despite his struggles to break into the team has also made Valverde’s future at the club uncertain.
Valverde’s versatility is another asset that will appeal to Klopp. He can play as a central midfielder, right winger, defensive midfielder, or even a right-back on occasion. He has scored 12 goals from midfield this season, further highlighting his attacking prowess.
However, Valverde’s reputation was dented in April after he was involved in a parking area bust-up with Villarreal’s Alex Baena. Valverde allegedly punched Baena after being taunted about his unborn child, leaving a sour taste in the mouth.
If Liverpool are able to secure Valverde’s signature, he would add a new dimension to their midfield and provide valuable depth to the squad. For Madrid, the sale of Valverde could help alleviate some of the financial pressure they are currently under, having already spent gargantuan sums on Bellingham and potentially Kylian Mbappe.
