Kane’s expertly headed goal from Pedro Porro’s cross took him to 209 goals in the Premier League, making him the second-highest goalscorer in the competition’s history, surpassing Wayne Rooney.

The win moved Spurs above Brighton into sixth place, although they have played three more games than the Seagulls, who face Everton on Monday.

Before Kane’s opener, Cristian Romero had gone closest to scoring for the hosts when his near-post header hit the crossbar, while Clement Lenglet produced a superb tackle to stop Jeffrey Schlupp’s progress towards goal at the other end.

Sam Johnstone made a close-range save to deny Son Heung-min in the final quarter of an hour, but Palace couldn’t find a way past Kane, who even helped to clear a loose ball from his own six-yard box.

The defeat was only Roy Hodgson’s second in seven games since returning to management, leaving his side in 12th place.

The result would be a massive boost for Tottenham, who will now look to build on this win and climb further up the table.
