It has been 13 years since Manchester United last played a match in Scotland, making this upcoming fixture a significant event for the club.

In 2010, Manchester United played a Champions League group stage match against Rangers in Scotland, which was the last time the Red Devils were hosted in the country.

The upcoming pre-season friendly against Lyon at Murrayfield will provide an opportunity for the club’s fans in Scotland and the UK to travel and watch the game, according to Man United’s football director, John Murtough.

He also emphasized the importance of the competitive match against Lyon in preparing for the upcoming season, with the 14:00 BST kick-off during school holidays expected to attract families and young fans from all over Scotland and the UK.

Scottish Rugby has set a target of selling out the 67,000 capacity stadium, which could exceed the attendance record of 65,442 set during a 2019 friendly between Liverpool and Napoli.

Manchester United will face their former player Laurent Blanc, who is now coaching Lyon, in the friendly match.

This will be the fifth time that the two teams have played against each other, with Manchester United winning their last meeting with Lyon in the Champions League last-16 in 2008 with a 2-1 aggregate score.

Following their last pre-season friendly against Lyon 13 years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side went on to defeat Chelsea in the final held in Moscow.
