Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo will miss the start of the 2023/24 season after sustaining an ankle injury during the club’s preseason friendly against Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old midfielder was injured in a tackle with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo during the match in Houston on Wednesday.

He left the field wearing a protective boot and has now flown back to the UK for further assessment and treatment.

In a statement, Manchester United confirmed Mainoo is expected to be sidelined for the “first part” of the new campaign following the injury setback.

Mainoo made his senior debut last season, starting a League Cup match against Charlton Athletic in January. He then made his Premier League bow as a substitute against Leicester City the following month.

The talented teenager was named Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year last season after impressing for the club’s youth teams.

On Instagram, Mainoo expressed determination to come back stronger from the injury as soon as possible. “I’ll be back stronger and in no time,” he wrote. “Thanks for your messages of support.”

Manchester United have one more preseason friendly remaining against Borussia Dortmund before they kick off their Premier League season at home to Wolves on August 14.

Mainoo’s injury is a blow to the club’s midfield options but the youngster will be aiming to return to action as soon as he has recovered.
