David de Gea’s Departure from Manchester United: A Look Back at His Legacy

After 12 years at Old Trafford, David de Gea announced his departure from Manchester United on Saturday, July 8th.


The Spanish goalkeeper was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 to replace Edwin van der Sar and since then, has become one of the most important players in the club’s history.

De Gea made 525 appearances for Manchester United, and his 190 clean sheets make him the club’s record holder in that category.

Bruno Fernandes, one of De Gea’s closest friends in the team, sent an emotional message on his Instagram story, pleading for the club to provide his former teammate with a proper goodbye. “You know what I think about you and how much I will miss you bro,” he wrote. “You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories.”

Marcus Rashford, who made his breakthrough in the United first team with De Gea as his teammate, wrote on Instagram: “You were here from my breakthrough, good luck with your next step brother.” Brazilian midfielder Fred added: “What a great pleasure to play and work with you, legend. One of the great friends I’ve made in football. You have all my respect and admiration and I wish you the best on your next challenges!”


Club captain Harry Maguire uploaded images of the Spaniard captioned: “All the best mate. Legend. Will miss you,” whilst Casemiro wrote: “David, my mate! You made history with Manchester United. You will always be a Red Devil, and these fans will continue to support you wherever your next challenge leads you. You will always be one of us. My best wishes!”

De Gea’s departure marks the end of an era at Manchester United. His impact on the team cannot be overstated, and he will be remembered as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.
