Both Manchester United players started the match and impressed Southgate, especially Maguire whose club form has come under criticism.
While Southgate wants Maguire playing regularly for United, he called the defender’s performance for England “outstanding”.
Rashford too has struggled for goals at United but found the net against Italy and received praise from Southgate for his tireless workrate. “Our front players worked unbelievably hard for the team,” said Southgate. “I don’t know how much ground Marcus Rashford covered today.”
Southgate was delighted with the team performance overall, highlighting their mentality and hunger as keys to the “relentless” display.
Securing qualification has given England momentum heading into Euro 2024, thanks in large part to strong displays from Maguire and Rashford despite their club struggles.
