Dominik Szoboszlai Hints at Virgil Van Dijk Becoming Liverpool’s New Captain Following Jordan Henderson’s Impending Departure

Liverpool new midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai, has suggested that Virgil Van Dijk could take over the role of captain at Liverpool as Jordan Henderson is set to leave for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia for a reported £12m deal that would see him earn £700,000-a-week. Henderson was left out of Liverpool’s pre-season friendly with Karlsruher SC as he is said to be close to the exit door.
Van Dijk was the captain in Wednesday’s friendly win and even commented on Szoboszlai’s Instagram post with a hands-up sign and the captain emoji. This has sparked speculation that he could be the new captain for Liverpool.
Henderson has been Liverpool’s captain since Steven Gerrard left in 2015 and led them to Premier League and Champions League victories. He is set to join former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.
This summer has seen many Liverpool midfielders leave, including Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner, whose contracts expired at the end of last season. Fabinho is also linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, said that no decisions had been made yet and that he respected the players’ opinions. He added that the decisions regarding players were made by him and were usually with consent. Klopp also mentioned that there would be a moment where they would have to talk about the departures, but it was not now.
