Manchester United has announced that Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes will be the club’s new captain, taking over from Harry Maguire.

This decision was made following Erik ten Hag’s move to strip Maguire of the armband due to his uncertain future with the club.

Although Maguire was disappointed to lose his place as United skipper, his first-team absence for large portions of the previous season meant that Fernandes was entrusted with the responsibility of captaining the team for most of the campaign.

The Portugal international will now assume the role of United captain on a permanent basis.

Ten Hag’s decision to name Fernandes as the club’s next captain was likely an easy one, given the manager’s repeated praise of the 28-year-old’s leadership qualities.

In particular, Ten Hag has highlighted Fernandes’ energy and lead-by-example approach on the pitch.

Fernandes has been a standout performer for United since his arrival at the club in January 2020.

In his first full season at Old Trafford, he scored 28 goals in all competitions and was named the Premier League’s Player of the Month four times.

He has also been a key figure in Portugal’s national team, helping them win the UEFA Nations League in 2019.

As United’s new captain, Fernandes will be expected to lead by example both on and off the pitch.
