Real Madrid’s all-time top-scoring Frenchman, Karim Benzema, will be leaving the club this summer, according to a statement released by the club.

Benzema had been expected to stay for one more year, but an offer reportedly worth over 100 million euros ($107 million) from a Saudi Arabian club has made him reconsider his future.

The 35-year-old forward, who struggled with injuries during the 2022-23 season, decided to void the one-year extension clause in his contract.

Real Madrid released a statement thanking him for his service to the club, describing his career as “an example of behaviour and professionalism,” and stating that he had earned the right to decide his future.

Benzema joined Real Madrid from Olympique Lyonnais in 2009. He quickly became the spearhead of the club’s attack and their main goal-scoring threat after Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018.

Benzema scored over 350 goals for the club and had his best season in 2021-22, scoring 44 times in all competitions to lead Real Madrid to a record-extending 14th European title, as well as the LaLiga crown.

During his time at Real Madrid, Benzema won a record 25 trophies, including five European Cups, four LaLiga titles, and three Copas del Rey.

It is yet to be confirmed which Saudi Arabian club he will be joining, but reports suggest that he could follow in Ronaldo’s footsteps, who signed a 2-1/2 year contract with Al Nassr in December 2022, estimated to be worth over 200 million euros.

Benzema’s departure will undoubtedly leave a hole in Real Madrid’s attack, but the club will have to look for alternatives as they aim to challenge for major honours next season.
