Arsenal won the Community Shield on penalties after Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri missed from the spot in a shoot-out.
The match was tied at 1-1 after extra time, with Cole Palmer scoring for City in the 77th minute and Leandro Trossard equalising in the 11th minute of stoppage time.
In the shoot-out, Martin Odegaard and Trossard both scored their penalties for their respective teams. Bernardo Silva and Bukayo Saka followed suit, leaving it up to Rodri and Fabio Vieira to decide the outcome.
Rodri’s penalty was saved by Aaron Ramsdale, giving Vieira the chance to win the match for Arsenal. The Portuguese midfielder made no mistake, firing his penalty into the top corner to give Arteta’s side the victory.
It was a closely-fought match, with both teams creating chances. However, it was Arsenal who were more clinical in the shoot-out, and they will be delighted to have started the season with a trophy.
Arsenal’s new signings impress
Arsenal’s new signings made a positive impression in the Community Shield. Declan Rice was solid in midfield, while Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber both showed flashes of their talent.
Rice was particularly impressive, breaking up City’s attacks and starting Arsenal’s attacks with some good passing. Havertz had a couple of chances to score, but he was unable to convert them. However, he showed some good movement and link-up play with his teammates.
Timber was also solid at the back, making a number of important clearances. He will be hoping to continue his good form in the Premier League season.
City’s missed chances cost them
City had a number of chances to win the match in normal time, but they were unable to convert them. De Bruyne was particularly wasteful, hitting the crossbar with a penalty in the second half.
City will be disappointed to have lost the Community Shield, but they will be hoping to bounce back in the Premier League season.
Arsenal’s win a boost for Arteta
The win will be a boost for Mikel Arteta, who has come under pressure in recent months. The Arsenal manager will be hoping that this is the start of a successful season for his side.
