As speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool continues, two names have emerged as potential replacements for the superstar forward. Reports from Saudi Arabia persist in claiming that Salah is in talks with Pro League clubs about a possible move, despite his agent, Ramy Abbas, recently denying such rumors. However, Salah’s age, over 30, and his contract’s expiration in two years raise legitimate questions about his long-term future at Liverpool.

Although it is likely in the early stages, Liverpool appears to be engaging in succession planning, and according to Calciomercato, Federico Chiesa and Leroy Sane are the players in consideration. The report suggests that Liverpool has earmarked 25-year-old Chiesa as a potential replacement for Salah in the upcoming season.

Chiesa, whose contract with Juventus also runs until 2025, has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with previous interest from clubs such as Tottenham, Newcastle, and Manchester United. Calciomercato states that it is uncertain whether Chiesa or 27-year-old Leroy Sane of Bayern Munich would inherit Salah’s role at Anfield, with a potential move for one of them likely to happen in January or next summer.

However, there are reasons to approach Calciomercato’s prediction with skepticism. While Sane is undoubtedly one of Europe’s finest wingers and his Bayern contract also extends until 2025, he will turn 28 next year, potentially making him too old and expensive for Liverpool’s recruitment strategy. On the other hand, Chiesa, despite being younger, has faced challenges with injuries and form recently, scoring just two goals in Serie A during the 2022/23 season.

Realistically, neither Chiesa nor Sane can match Salah’s exceptional goal-scoring and assist contributions. Replacing Salah’s attacking output will undoubtedly be a dilemma for Liverpool when the Egyptian eventually departs.

Within the Liverpool squad, there are already promising young talents waiting for their opportunity. Scottish teenager Ben Doak shows great potential, and there is a chance for him to develop into a top talent. Additionally, Fabio Carvalho, currently on loan at RB Leipzig for the season, remains a Liverpool player and could potentially make an impact in the future.

As Salah’s future remains uncertain, Liverpool will need to carefully consider their options and strategize for the potential transition when the time comes to replace their prolific forward.
