Ángel Di Maria, the World Cup champion and Argentine international, is now officially a free agent after leaving Juventus with immediate effect. The 35-year-old forward arrived at Juventus as a free agent from Paris Saint-Germain last summer on a one-year contract, which has now expired. Di Maria made 40 competitive appearances for Juventus, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists.
Di Maria has options from two different leagues for his next move, and it is expected that he will receive concrete offers in the next few days. While Benfica is reportedly dreaming of Di Maria’s return, no decision has been made yet, and the race for the player’s signature remains open.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Di Maria reflected on his time at Juventus: “I have come to the end of a difficult and complicated period. I leave safe in the knowledge I gave my all for the club to continue winning titles, but it was not possible. I leave with a bitter taste at not having succeeded, but with the joy of bringing with me many friends in this marvellous locker room that I was part of.”
Di Maria’s time at Juventus was marked by several injury problems, but he had a standout moment with a hat-trick in the Europa League play-off against FC Nantes. The season was also interrupted by the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Argentina won the ultimate football trophy. Di Maria played a crucial role in Argentina’s triumph but was jeered off the field by home fans in his final game at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin.
As a free agent, Di Maria now has the opportunity to choose his next destination and continue to make an impact on the European football scene. It remains to be seen where he will end up, but one thing is for sure – his talent and experience will be highly sought after.
