OFFICIAL: Sofyan Amrabat to wear No. 4 for Man Utd
Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Sofyan Amrabat will wear the No. 4 shirt following his loan move from Fiorentina.
The 26-year-old Morocco international joined United on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day. Now that the move is complete, the club has announced his squad number.
Amrabat will take over the No. 4 jersey, which was last worn by Phil Jones. The former England defender spent 12 years at Old Trafford wearing No. 4 before leaving when his contract expired last summer.
Centre-backs and midfielders typically wear the No. 4 shirt at United. Recent players to don it include Owen Hargreaves from 2007-2011 and Gabriel Heinze in 2004.
Legendary captain Steve Bruce was the first United player to wear No. 4 after squad numbers were introduced in 1993. He was succeeded by David May, who switched from No. 12 and had the number for five seasons, including the Treble-winning 1998/99 campaign.
Amrabat will hope to play an important role for Erik ten Hag’s side as they seek to improve upon a disappointing sixth-placed finish last season. The Fiorentina loanee will look to follow in the footsteps of past United greats who excelled in the iconic No. 4 shirt.
