Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Joselu on a season-long loan from Espanyol, with an option to buy him permanently for €1.5m. The fee for the loan is believed to be €500k.

The 33-year-old striker returns to the club where he began his professional career after an impressive season with Espanyol, despite the team’s relegation from La Liga. Joselu scored 16 goals in the league, a tally bettered only by Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski, and has earned three goals in four appearances for the Spanish national team.

Real Madrid have yet to reveal their plans for Joselu, who is currently their only recognised number nine, although Rodrygo Goes can also play through the middle. It remains to be seen whether the veteran striker will be the main striker for Los Blancos this season or play a secondary role.

This is Real Madrid’s fourth signing of the summer, including the return of Brahim Diaz from Milan, as well as Jude Bellingham and Fran Garcia. With Espanyol in Segunda, it was unlikely that they would be able to retain one of the most consistent goalscorers in Spain.

In their official statement, Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid and Espanyol have agreed on the loan of Joselu, who will be linked to the club for the next season, with a purchase option at the end of it.” The arrival of Joselu will provide Real Madrid with additional attacking options as they look to challenge for the La Liga title next season.
