Manchester United are reportedly moving closer to signing Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat with ‘secret contact’ having been made between the Red Devils and Fiorentina, according to reports.

Amrabat caught the eye with his impressive performances as Morocco reached the Qatar World Cup semi-finals in December.

He is now United’s top midfield target following their £72 million acquisition of striker Rasmus Hojlund.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims a deal could be completed soon now that Fiorentina have nearly finalized the sale of Gaetano Castrovilli to AFC Bournemouth.

Pedulla tweeted: “After the sale of Castrovilli, Amrabat’s turn will come soon. As mentioned previously, there have been SECRET contacts between Fiorentina and MUFC through intermediaries.”

United were keen to sign him in January but his Serie A employers were reluctant to let him go at the time.

Amrabat has been on Fiorentina’s books for four years, making 15 European appearances as the club reached the Europa Conference League final.

United are yet to make an opening bid for the £30 million-rated midfielder and will need to offload some players first.

Donny van de Beek, Fred and Brandon Williams have all been deemed surplus to requirements and are attracting interest from other clubs.

United recently opened talks with Real Sociedad over a possible sale of Van de Beek while they expect an improved offer from Galatasaray for Fred after turning down an undisclosed bid from the Turkish side last month.
