Manchester City have won the 2022/23 UEFA Super Cup after defeating Sevilla in a penalty shootout.

Sevilla boss Jose Luis Mendilibar named a strong starting XI, including Yassine Bounou and Marcos Acuna, despite speculation around their futures.

It was Bounou’s former club that took the lead, as Acuna’s cross was headed home powerfully by Youssef En-Nesyri. The Moroccan was a constant threat for Sevilla.

Sevilla held their lead until the 62nd minute, when Cole Palmer turned in Rodri’s cross to level the scores.

Neither side could find a winner in normal or extra time, so penalties were required to decide the trophy.

The first nine penalties were all scored before Nemanja Gudelj saw his effort crash off the crossbar, handing Manchester City victory in the Super Cup shootout.

It was heartbreak for Sevilla, who fought well against the Premier League champions but ultimately came up just short on spot kicks.

Manchester City can celebrate winning another European trophy under Pep Guardiola’s leadership. But Sevilla should be proud of their performance against the trophy favorites.
