Jurgen Klopp couldn’t hide his live reaction when he learned that former Liverpool transfer target, Jude Bellingham, scored a last-gasp winner in his Champions League debut for Real Madrid. The German manager had expressed a keen interest in bringing the 20-year-old star to Anfield during the summer transfer window. However, Bellingham ultimately joined Real Madrid, becoming a ‘Galactico’ instead.

The opening weeks of the season have showcased why both Liverpool and Real Madrid were eager to secure the services of the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder. Bellingham has already found the back of the net five times in just five La Liga games, making him the top scorer in the division, surpassing even Robert Lewandowski.

Financial considerations reportedly led Liverpool to withdraw from the deal, paving the way for Los Blancos to secure Bellingham’s signature. Liverpool then had to carefully allocate their funds and invest in multiple players. Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominic Szoboszlai were among the recruits.

Of the four players, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai have seen the most playing time and have seamlessly integrated into Liverpool’s midfield. Nevertheless, fans may still wonder how things would have unfolded had Bellingham been wearing the iconic red shirt for the 2023/24 campaign. It is undoubtedly a topic that stirs curiosity among supporters, especially as they witness the English youngster making waves on the grandest European stage while their own club competes in the second-tier European competition.

During a press conference before Liverpool’s Europa League fixture against LASK, Klopp’s attention was drawn to Real Madrid securing a late victory in their Champions League match against Union Berlin. A smile formed on Klopp’s face, tinged perhaps with a hint of regret, knowing that Bellingham was a player he had pursued. Chuckling, Klopp confirmed, “Bellingham?” Shaking his head in disbelief at the young player’s ability to score crucial goals for his new club, the Liverpool manager looked around the room with a radiant smile.
