The Hungarian midfielder made the move to Anfield from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £60 million, and he is set to compete with Haaland’s former club Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.
Szoboszlai and Haaland were teammates at Salzburg for two seasons, and they struck up a close friendship during that time. The pair have continued to stay in touch since Haaland’s move to Dortmund in 2020, and Szoboszlai says that Haaland gave him some valuable advice before he joined Liverpool.
“Erling and I are still close,” Szoboszlai told The Athletic. “We message each other and we talk when either of us has time. I live near to him now so we’ll probably have some dinners together.
“Before I joined Liverpool, he just said: ‘Get ready!’ But he knows I’m ready. He told me it is a crazy league and that I’m going to love it.”
Szoboszlai is aware of the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester City, but he says he is not intimidated by it. He is also excited about the prospect of facing his old friend Haaland on the pitch for the first time.
“I’m not surprised by how well he has done at Man City,” Szoboszlai said. “I knew what he could do and how much work he puts in. He’s an unbelievable player.
“I know all about the rivalry between Liverpool and the Manchester clubs, but I’m ready. That’s why I’ve come to Liverpool. I want to see how it feels when I’m playing in those games.”
Szoboszlai is one of several new signings that Liverpool have made this summer, and he is expected to play a key role in the club’s quest for silverware this season. He is a talented midfielder with a lot of potential, and he will be looking to make a big impact at Anfield.
