Brentford striker Ivan Toney has publicly declared his support for Liverpool, while also heaping praise on one of the Reds’ star players. In an interview with Kick Game, Toney was asked about the toughest defenders he has faced in the Premier League, to which he responded with admiration for Liverpool Virgil van Dijk.
As a Liverpool fan, Toney was quick to name the Dutch defender as one of the best in the league, saying, “Van Dijk is one of the best. He’s up there as one of the best.” This is high praise indeed, given that Van Dijk is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world.
Toney was the third-highest scorer in the Premier League last season, with an impressive tally of 20 goals. However, none of those goals came against Liverpool, with Toney missing their January clash due to injury. In fact, Toney has yet to score against the Merseyside club in any of his three appearances against them, with Van Dijk helping Liverpool to keep a clean sheet in two of those games.
Unfortunately for Toney, he will likely miss at least one of Brentford’s games against Liverpool next season due to a ban for breaches of betting laws. However, while Liverpool fans may appreciate Toney’s fandom, they will undoubtedly hope that his scoring record against their club continues to be poor.
Toney’s praise for Van Dijk is a testament to the defender’s skill and influence on the game. Despite missing most of last season with a serious knee injury, Van Dijk is still widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, and his return to full fitness will no doubt be a huge boost for Liverpool next season.
