Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed sympathy for Liverpool following the controversial disallowed goal in their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The goal scored by Luis Diaz was ruled out due to a “significant human error” acknowledged by the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited). Liverpool responded with a scathing statement, suggesting that “sporting integrity had been undermined.” The club has requested the VAR audio from the match in an effort to shed light on the incident.

When asked about the incident, Arteta shared his thoughts and highlighted the challenges associated with VAR. He mentioned that discussions were held before the start of the season with the intention of improving the game and finding the best way to move forward. However, he acknowledged that the pressure on officials is increasing due to the scrutiny and the impact of their decisions. He emphasized that it is a difficult situation for both clubs and managers, as these decisions can significantly affect results and seasons.

He stressed the importance of having a clean and honest game, playing under the conditions allowed by the rules. When those conditions are not met, it becomes extremely frustrating.

Arteta also highlighted the complexity of VAR and the challenges it presents. While the processes and explanations may sound logical, he noted that in heated moments, when dealing with millimeter differences and interpretations, the reality is very different. He expressed his concern that despite the efforts to implement VAR, there are still unanswered questions and unresolved issues surrounding its application.
