Mason Greenwood has been gradually finding his stride at Getafe in recent weeks, after a somewhat slow start to his loan spell from Manchester United. The young winger made a notable impression against Atletico Madrid before the winter break and had hoped to continue his strong form into the new year.

However, that was not the case at all, as Greenwood was one of three Getafe players who received red cards during their loss to Rayo Vallecano in the South Madrid derby on Tuesday. The Englishman was sent off for dissent, with referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez claiming that Greenwood had used inappropriate language by saying “f*** off” after a free-kick was not awarded.

Both Getafe and Greenwood have strongly denied the allegation, and as a result, they have appealed the decision to issue a red card to the Competition Committee, according to Marca. Their hope is to have the suspension overturned so that Greenwood can be available for their next La Liga match against Osasuna on January 21st.

Getafe is eager to have Greenwood on the field at El Sadar, as he plays a crucial role in Jose Bordalas’ team. However, his fate now lies in the hands of others.
