Last summer, Frenkie de Jong confirmed that Manchester United had made an offer to sign him from Barcelona.

Although Manchester United showed interest and Barcelona was open to sell, the transfer did not materialize partly because De Jong requested deferred wages from previous years to be paid.

In an interview with Ziggo Sport Voetbal earlier this week, De Jong acknowledged that he had a “situation” with Barcelona President Joan Laporta because the club was willing to sell him in order to alleviate their financial problems.

In a recent interview with Dutch broadcaster NOS, De Jong disclosed that Manchester United had indeed attempted to lure him away from Camp Nou.

De Jong stated, “Manchester United had already talked to Barcelona [last summer], even though I had expressed my desire to stay here.”

He further explained, “The club was facing financial difficulties and they saw an opportunity to sell me for a significant amount, which they wanted to do. However, I was not willing to leave, so I stayed.”

De Jong expressed his desire to stay at the club for as long as possible, as long as everything continues to work out well for both him and the team.

Manchester United eventually signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro as midfield reinforcements, while De Jong stayed at Barcelona and played a key role in securing the club’s first La Liga title since 2019.

When asked about his thoughts on winning the La Liga title, De Jong said, “Winning the league was a great achievement for me here. Now, the only thing left for me to win this season is the Nations League with the Netherlands.”

De Jong mentioned, “Although it’s not the Euros or the World Cup, winning the Nations League would still be significant. It would be a good indication of our team’s potential and capabilities.”
